People with Aphasia needed for a research study about communication

What is involved?

  • Requires 3 visits over the course of 3 months.
  • Visits range from 1-3 hours for most participants.
  • Involves completing test and questionnaires about everyday communication.
  • Participants will be reimbursed $50 per visit, per pair (person with aphasia and friend/family member).

Who is eligible?

  • Men and women with aphasia and a close family member or friend.
  • Between 1-9 months after stroke.
  • No history of progressive neurological disease, psychopathology, substance abuse, other speech-language disorder, or traumatic brain injury (TMI).
  • Native English speakers who could read and write before stroke.

People who have had a recent stroke or TIA (within past 6 months) needed for IRIS trial that will test a new approach to prevent a stroke or heart attack.

What is involved?

  • The patient will have a fasting blood test for insulin resistance.
  • Only patients with insulin resistance will continue in the study.
  • About 1 in 2 patients with stroke or TIA has insulin resistance.
  • Eligible patients will be randomly assigned to two groups. Half of the participants will take the active medication, pioglitazone. The other half will take a placebo.
  • Participants will stay on their study pill for an average of 4 years and will be followed closely for any new strokes or heart attacks

Who is eligible?

  • Age 40 or older
  • Not on medication for diabetes
  • Recent stroke or TIA (within past 6 months)
  • Insulin resistant (by blood test)
