Therapy Services
Recent research shows that with the right type of therapy the brain has the potential for significant recovery. This is true regardless of the length of time that has passed since a stroke or brain injury.
SWAN Patients:
- Participate in a program designed for their individual needs.
- Participate in one-on-one therapy.
- Undergo training with evidence-based techniques.
- Develop unused capabilities.
- Experience an enriched environment.
- Develop support and camaraderie with other survivors.
To accomplish these goals, SWAN uses the latest technology and techniques in neurological rehabilitation.
- Repetitive task practice.
- Neuromuscular re-education with manual facilitation and resistance.
- Progressive resistive strengthening for extremities and trunk.
- Constraint-induced therapy and modified constraint-induced therapy for those who meet qualifying criteria.
- Various technologies designed to improve balance, walking and motor function of the upper extremities.
- Individualized programs developed for each patient after careful evaluation.
SWAN therapies are designed to:
- Improve walking ability.
- Maximize trunk, arm, hand, and leg function.
- Improve balance.
- Enhance the patient's ability to participate in activities of daily living.
- Decrease caregiver responsibilities.
SWAN offers:
- An intensive 1/2 day (3 hours)
- A full day (6 hours) program
- Traditional therapies of one to three hours
Each day patients leave feeling weary, yet challenged and motivated.

"After suffering a massive ischemic stroke at age 21, I was referred to SWAN Rehab for continuing neuro rehab. Dr. Kay Wing and her dedicated staff of therapists have been my constant source of strength - and it is with their skill, compassion and guidance that I've gained back my independence and improved my mobility. The progress I have made to date is remarkable. Words can never express my gratitude for this wonderful place and these wonderful people."

Medicare Legislation:
Last week Congress failed to pass a Medicare Bill that will affect all stroke survivors. This means that an $1810.00 cap on PT and a $1810.00 cap on OT will go into effect July 1, 2008. This will be retroactive to January 1, 2008. There is hope however. Congress will reconvene on Monday, July 7, and is expected to begin negotiations on a Medicare package that can achieve the needed votes in the US House, the US Senate, and be signed by the President.
Your legislators need to hear from you. They need to know your story and how this reduction in therapy will affect your life as well as your family. You can go to the following web page for information on how to contact your legislators. www.apta.org.
